Hey everyone. I hope you’ve been having a good week. This week’s song is pretty simple on all accounts. Let’s check it out then get into it. It’s called “Will I Be A Memory?”
Listen here:
How did i write this?
The writing process for this one was a little bit different. I wrote and recorded both the guitars and vocals at the same time. Some of the lyrics came out right away while I was improvising, but a lot of the words I sang were things like “na na na” etc. so I could get a melody out and then write words to that.
I wanted a simple progression and a simple song. The vocal melody is nice and simple all the way through and the chords are also pretty straightforward. *NOTE* I tuned my guitar to Eb standard for this song, so everything written sounds one half step lower than it is written. The form and chords are:
- Verse: G, Em, Bm, D
- Chorus: C, D, G C, D, Em C, D, G, *D/F#*, Em C, D
* Slash chords are written “Chord/Bass note” and, in this case, it is also just a first inversion D major chord * - Verse: same as before
- Chorus: same as before
- Bridge: Bm, Em, G, D Bm, Em, D, C, D (repeat)
- Chorus: C, D, G C, D, Em C, D, G, *D/F#*, Em C, D C, D G
Now that we can see the form and chords, let’s look at the lyrics.
Lyrics
Verse
Tryin’ not to think about the night that’s just passed
I didn’t think that anything could ever last like that
Oh no
We were touchin’ every star, nothin’ out of reach
Never fell so hard, as I did with you like that
Oh no
Chorus
Did you ever think there’d be
A world that exists for you and me?
Have you tried again to reach the stars?
If you had just another moment
Would you spend it with me?
When you’re gone, will I be a memory?
Verse
I’m trying to forget your touch, the way you held me tight
But all the memories of you keep me up all night
Oh no
We danced beneath the stars, lost in each other’s eyes
Slowly our hearts began to harmonize/synchronize
Oh no
Chorus
Did you ever think there’d be
A world that exists for you and me?
Have you tried again to reach the stars?
If you had just another moment
Would you spend it with me?
When you’re gone, will I be a memory?
Bridge
In the darkness, I search for a sign
Somethin’ to guide me, something divine
To show me the way, to lead me back to you
Time passes us by, memories fade
But my love will always remain
Chorus
Did you ever think there’d be
A world that exists for you and me?
Have you tried again to reach the stars?
If you had just another moment
Would you spend it with me?
When you’re gone, will I be a memory?
When you’re gone, will I be a memory?
The lyrics are about whatever you want them to be about. That’s the same for anything you write. If you find you’re struggling with writing lyrics of your own, just start writing about your struggle to write lyrics. Find some way to get your pen/pencil/fingers to paper/phone/computer. Just like anything else, if you don’t do something, you can’t hope to get better at it.

Take your time with what you’re doing and ask for help whenever you need it. I offer music lessons and those branch into lessons about lyrics, songwriting, recording, producing, etc. and I offer a sliding scale to keep costs realistic for you in one of, if not the, most expensive points of time in history.

Be kind to yourself and others and have as much fun as you can. Ask questions, take chances, don’t just sit and wonder about possibilities; put that wonder into action.
Thank you for your time and have an amazing rest of your week.
