How can I make a typical acoustic singer-songwriter pop song?

Hey everyone. Sorry I’m so late this week. Lots has been going on and I’ve been wrapped up in a large number of projects and everything.

This week will be short and sweet. Let’s get right into it.

Listen here:

Lyrics:

Verse

I can’t believe I’m hearin’ this from you
You asked for space you got a place and said we’re through
And now I’m retracing my steps up to this day
To find the answer as to why you walked away

You never hinted at your sadness
You didn’t let me understand
Suddenly you had decided
You didn’t want me as your man

Chorus

Now I’m stuck here in this mess
Bound to you forevermore
I want more and you want less
But you’ve closed and locked the door

Verse

I drive past all our favourite spots
I stop and stare, breathe in the air, and reminisce
I try to stay strong with everything I’ve got
Oh what I’d give for one more kiss

You never hinted at your sadness
You didn’t let me understand
Suddenly you had decided
You didn’t want me as your man

Chorus

Now I’m stuck here in this mess
Bound to you forevermore
I want more and you want less
But you’ve closed and locked the door

This is actually a song I wrote a few years back and is even the recorded version from then. I was going through old songs/files/projects etc. and found this one and thought, “Hey! I wrote that for the soul purpose of making a typical acoustic singer-songwriter song!”

The lyrical content, as you can see, is about a struggle in a relationship that could either be literal, figurative, or entirely imaginary. The entirety of the music is one acoustic riff/progression that I just looped over and over again. It goes “C, Em, G, D” in chords and they are all compound intervals – meaning they are 10ths instead of 3rds. A 10th is just a 3rd but an octave above where you’d normally place the 3rd.

For the vocal delivery you want to try to put yourself in that heartfelt/broken place and think about making a music video with lots of rain and/or fall themes – even though it’s winter – and reminiscing scenes of a love either lost or falling.

Parting thoughts

That’s it! Super short and sweet. I hope you enjoyed everything. My prices are changing soon, so it will be $50 for an hour lesson and $25 for a half hour. The packages will reflect this as well. So keep an eye on my services and contact me or email me to book your lesson. I offer a sliding scale as well, so we can work something out one way or another.

Be kind to yourself and others, keep up the hard work, keep practicing, and have a great day!

All the best,

– Matt
